How to Designate Your Preferred Name on Your NYU ID

You can opt to have your preferred name on your NYU ID rather than your legal name. The preferred name is pulled from the “Registry,” which feeds the Card system as well as the NYU Directory. Students can indicate their preferred name by going to start.nyu.edu and selecting “Your NYU Directory information.”  If someone adds a preferred name, they should wait 24 hours and then go to the Card Center to get a new card.  There is no charge for new cards due to name changes.

If there is no preferred name listed in the Registry, then the primary (legal) name will be printed.

More information on preferred names at NYU can be found on the Registrar’s site and the LGBTQ Center’s site.
